Roman Holiday
Another of the Mylar Chamber images. The subject is Jhil McEntyre, one of his major muses of the period and the mother of his son, Raphael Aladdin.

Julian Beck, the abstract expressionist painter and poet who, along with his wife Judith Malina, founded the Living Theater. Julian was a tremendous inspiration and mentor to Cohen. Cohen’s film of the Living Theater performances – Paradise Now – stands as an indelible document of the upheavals of the late 1960s.

Jack Smith, the father of New York underground film and theater. Jack was a mentor to Ira, shaping his artistic aesthetic. Here Smith was preparing for a session of reflective Mylar photographing when Ira captured him in Day-Glo makeup and props.

Another Mylar Chamber image used by Life magazine, 26 December 1969, in its special issue to mark the end of the 1960s. The image illustrated a section on drugs which stated that ‘few came as close to explaining the euphoric distortions of hallucinogenics’ as Cohen.

Jimi Hendrix photographed in Ira Cohen’s Jefferson Street loft, from Mylar Chamber, New York, late 1960s. Ira recalled that Hendrix was rather shy and quiet. Hendrix said of Cohen’s Mylar Chamber images: ‘Looking at your pictures is like looking through butterfly wings’

William S Burroughs in Cohen’s New York loft, also part of his Mylar Chamber series. Cohen met Burroughs in Tangier, Morocco in the early 1960s, where he published Burroughs in his Gnaoua magazine.

This was taken during a visit to London in 1982 where Cohen read his poetry and exhibited his images for the first time in the UK at the October Gallery.

Bom Shankar, an ascetic of the Aghori sect
The Aghori’s somewhat taboo ritual worship practices involve some or all of the following: meat eating, alcohol drinking, consumption of beverages and foods with opiates, hallucinogens and cannabis products as key ingredients, cannibalism, residing in cremation grounds and tantric sex rituals. Licking the skull shows the Aghori’s fearlessness in the face of death. Sadhus, yogis and fakirs fascinated Cohen and he amassed a sizeable portrait gallery of what he termed Spirit Warriors

Master Musicians of Joujouka, Mohamed Mokhchan, Mohamed El Attar, Abdullah Ziyat and Abdeslam Dahnoun with the late Mohamed Hamri in Temple Bar, Dublin, 1992. In the early 1960s Cohen met Hamri in Tangier. Hamri was the Moroccan painter who introduced the Beat poets and Rolling Stone Brian Jones to the Sufi trance music of his village, Joujouka. This photograph was taken during the William Burroughs and Brion Gysin art exhibition, the Here to Go Show, at which both Cohen and Hamri exhibited.

William S Burroughs with poet and author of The Basketball Diaries Jim Carroll. Cohen was active in New York’s downtown arts and poetry scene during the 1980s and 90s. He rarely went anywhere without his Pentax Spotmatic – his camera of choice for most of his career.

Nepali Street Urchin
According to Cohen’s collaborator Ira Landgarten ‘this was one of the ubiquitous urchins we regularly saw in the streets of Kathmandu. Already smoking cigarettes at a young age, Ira captured this young boy perfectly.’

Miriam With Violin
Miriam was one of the many young travelers who availed themselves to Cohen’s photo tableaus in Kathmandu, Nepal during his sojourn there in the mid-1970s.

Chillum Baba
Cohen had a close association to the sect of Naga Babas, the Shiva worshiping, cannabis imbibing renunciates of Northern India. He photographed them extensively. They regularly smoked a mixture of tobacco and marijuana in cylindrical clay pipes as part of their ritual worship and their search for bliss.

Petra Vogt, Mutant
Vogt was a German actress working with the Living Theater when Ira met her in New York in the late 1960s. She became his collaborator and muse, spending several years with him in India and Nepal. They were an exotic, theatrical couple, goading each other on and pushing their creative envelopes. She eventually became a nun of the Brahma Kumari sect, an international Hindu spiritual organization.

Allen Ginsberg, Life Mask
Part of Ira Cohen’s Bandaged Poets series, which first began when Ira met his second wife Caroline Gosselin in Amsterdam in the late 1970s. Gosselin had been making ‘life masks’ and Ira began photographing the process of bandaging all the noted poets that crossed their path. Cohen had originally published Ginsberg in Gnaoua in 1964. Cohen would later wryly comment that Allen Ginsberg made sure New York City wasn’t big enough for two bearded Jewish poets.

Here, Cohen references La Malinche, a controversial figure in Mexican history. Ira was extremely well read and often conjured historical and mythological figures in his photographs and poems.

Rhinolophus Blasii

This is a Rhinolophus blasii from Mount Mabu in northern Mozambique. We spent 13 nights sampling in a remarkably intact montane rain forest. Although capture success was low, we recorded a very diverse yet even community of bats in this forest. In areas of West Africa, a similar pattern was observed in intact wild habitat: low levels of abundance but a highly diverse community.

Rhinolophus Blasii

This is one of the last captures from a busy night sampling near a hydroelectric dam in the heart of a forested gorge on Mount Mulanje in Malawi. This species of horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus blasii, was very common, making up roughly 70 percent of all the individuals that we captured in and around this site.

Rhinolophus Simulator

This is another species of horseshoe bat called Rhinolophus simulator. Although very similar in size and general appearance to R. blasii, the horseshoe (nasal) structure differs and it calls at a completely different echolocation frequency. Interestingly, we observed that on Mount Mulanje, one species was common, while the other was rare; whereas in lowland forests, it was the other way around. This may be due to competition for feeding niches, roosting sites, or differences in life history traits. Although this individual is colored a rusty orange, there is a separate form of the same species that is a dull brown.

Rhinolophus Simulator

This is another Rhinolophus simulator captured in lowland forest. This shares the same coloration as the other.

Kerivoula Lanosa

This is a fully grown woolly bat, Kerivoula lanosa. Weighing only 4 to 5 grams, they are specialists in dense forest environments. In Australia, members of this genus were found to be feeding almost exclusively on spiders that are gleaned from webs hanging over small forest paths or between the foliage. The common name of the genus refers to their elegant fur, which in this species is grizzled with long white hairs.

Miniopterus

This is a species of the genus Miniopterus, (long-fingered bats). A molecular study (including samples from our work) is showing that this particular family of bats appears to have endemic species to almost all the major mountain ranges of Africa. And yet they are almost indistinguishable based on external appearance. This represents such a large degree of “cryptic” diversity that one prominent researcher described the family as Africa’s “cichlid fish of the skies.”

Miniopterus

This is a second species of the genus Miniopterus. While a similar size to the first, the skull length is slightly greater and the pelage is a rich dark brown, rather than dark grey. We captured this individual while sampling the standing forests of Mulanje cedar, an endemic tree that acts as the emblem and namesake of this mountain. Unfortunately, the tree is on the verge of extinction as illegal logging of the timber continues and a planned bauxite mining project will see large tracts of remaining forest destroyed.

Miniopterus

This is a third species of the genus Miniopterus (long-fingered bats). This is a separate species to the darker Miniopterus shown previously, and the form is generally larger, with lighter fur.

Myotis Tricolor

This is Myotis tricolor, a relatively common savanna species that is widespread across Africa. Its name refers to the three colors present on each hair—a dark base leads to a cream-colored middle and terminates in a beautiful rusty orange. The open mouth nicely shows two glands in the cheeks, behind the rows of teeth. In other species, males have been observed marking territorial areas of a cave wall by rubbing these glands against the surface.

Myotis Welwitschii

This is a very rare species called Myotis welwitschii. Known from only scattered few records across the continent, this catch was a fabulous record. The species is thought to have a paramontane distribution—i.e., it is found associated to, but not restricted to, mountain environments. It is possible that they migrate altitudinally with season. The coloring on the wings is a stark red, pockmarked with black spots and blotches.

In 1879 Kahn became a bank clerk in Paris, but studied for a degree in the evenings. His tutor was Henri Bergson, who remained his friend all his life. He graduated in 1881 and continued to mix in intellectual circles, making friends with Auguste Rodin and Mathurin Méheut. In 1892 Kahn became a principal associate of the Goudchaux Bank, which was regarded as one of most important financial houses of Europe.

In 1893 Kahn acquired a large property in Boulogne-Billancourt, where he established a unique garden containing a variety of garden styles including English, Japanese, a rose garden and a conifer wood. This became a meeting place for French and European intelligentsia until the 1930s when due to the Wall Street Crash of 1929, Kahn became bankrupt. At that time the garden was turned into a public park in which Kahn would still take walks. Kahn died during the Nazi occupation of France.

In 1909 Kahn travelled with his chauffeur and photographer, Alfred Dutertre to Japan on business and returned with many photographs of the journey. This prompted him to begin a project collecting a photographic record of the entire Earth. He appointed Jean Brunhes as the project director, and sent photographers to every continent to record images of the planet using the first colour photography, autochrome plates, and early cinematography. Between 1909 and 1931 they collected 72,000 colour photographs and 183,000 meters of film. These form a unique historical record of 50 countries, known as “The Archives of the Planet”.

Kahn’s photographers began documenting France in 1914, just days before the outbreak of World War I, and by liaising with the military managed to record both the devastation of war, and the struggle to continue everyday life and agricultural work.

He also promoted education at the highest level through traveling scholarships.

The economic crisis of the Great Depression ruined Kahn and put an end to his project.

Since 1986 the photographs have been collected into a museum at 14, Rue du Port, Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, at the site of his garden. It is now a French national museum and includes four hectares of gardens, as well as the museum which houses his historic photographs and film.

Here you can see some of these astonishing and historic photography of wonderful world of Albert Khan. His collection of photos is taking us on a trip through a long lost world of different cultures living untouched and far from each other, before the globalization, mass media, and terrible transformation during which we all began eating McDonald’s, drinking Coca-Cola, smoking Marlboro, wearing the same clothes, liking the same things and laughing to the same jokes.

These photos are taking us to a somewhat romantic or romanticized world that maybe hasn’t ever possessed the features that we attributed to it. European people and West in general always had a bit mistaken ideas about the rest of the world and especially about the East, Asia and Africa. You can find more information about this ideas false assumptions underlying Western attitudes toward the East in Edward Said’s famous book Orientalism.

We hold on to these crooked ideas of a distant, exotic and sensual East even today and you can see this in every Hollywood movie when starts some erotic scene you can hear oriental music, and every man’s dream is of a harem filled with wide-eyed belly dancers that can’t wait to fulfill every his wish and desire. The truth is this could not possibly be further form real East and especially the Middle East which is very conservative toward sexuality.

However wrong and superficial these ideas were that the West has about the East, we can not completely deny the historic and artistic value of these amazing images. It is for the best to simply relax and put all these ideas aside and enjoy in this amazing collection of this great philanthropist and world traveler from the beginning of the twentieth century. Let’s remind ourselves how the world used to look hundred years ago.

Glinn, a Pittsburgh native, studied literature at Harvard University, where he edited and photographed for the college newspaper Harvard Crimson. He served in the U.S. Army and worked for Life magazine from 1949 to 1950. Glinn became an associate member of Magnum in 1951 along with Eve Arnold and Dennis Stock – the first Americans to join the agency – with Glinn becoming a full member in 1954

Glinn became famous for his color pictures of the South Seas, Japan, Russia, Mexico, and California. At a New Year’s party in 1958, Glinn was notified that Fidel Castro had taken over Cuba. By dawn the next day he was covering the revolution in Cuba, making photographs “as everybody got whatever weapon they could get their hands on,” he once said. In 1959 the photographer received the Mathew Brady Award for Magazine Photographer of the Year, offered by the University of Missouri for a photo essay on the South Seas.

When asked in an interview which of his images he most closely identifies with, Glinn replied that without a doubt it is the picture showing the back of Nikita Khrushchev’s head in front of the Lincoln Memorial:

“ I was late and I couldn’t get to where everybody else was, in front of Khrushchev, so I came running up and I was in the back of him. And I looked up and there it was. I got two shots of that and then it disintegrated. If I’d been on time I would have gotten a very ordinary picture of Khrushchev and Henry Cabot Lodge looking at this statue of Lincoln but you couldn’t see the statue. The most important thing that a photographer like me can have is luck, you know.”

Tourism has been a major sector of Venetian industry since the 18th century, when it was a major center for the grand tour, due to its beautiful cityscape, uniqueness and rich musical and artistic cultural heritage. In the 19th century, it became a fashionable center for the rich and famous, often staying or dining at luxury establishments such as the Danieli Hotel and the Caffè Florian. It continued being a fashionable city in vogue right into the early 20th century. In the 1980s the Carnival of Venice was revived and the city has become a major centre of international conferences and festivals, such as the prestigious Venice Biennale and the Venice Film Festival, which attract visitors from all over the world for their theatrical, cultural, cinematic, artistic and musical productions.

Today there are numerous attractions in Venice, such as St Mark’s Basilica, the Grand Canal, and the Piazza San Marco, to name a few. The Lido di Venezia is also a popular international luxury destination, attracting thousands of actors, critics, celebrities and mainly people in the cinematic industry.

However, Venice’s popularity as a major worldwide tourist destination has caused several problems, including the fact that the city can be very overcrowded at some points of the year. It is regarded by some as a tourist trap, and by others as a ‘living museum’. The competition for foreigners to buy homes in Venice has made prices rise so highly, that numerous inhabitants are forced to move to more affordable areas of Veneto and Italy, most notably Mestre.

Have a look at this interesting collection showing how old black and white pictures of some place perfectly fit in with the background, when the setting behind it is exactly the same place, only 50 and more years latter.

These photos are from Russia and they show the sites of Sankt-Peterburg, that was also named Petrograd and then Leningrad, until 1991, when it changed again to Sankt-Peterburg.

This city had a really exciting and vivid history. In this photos you can see the combination of modern day look of this city and the photos in black and withe are from the World War II. These are the captions of the great siege that lasted 872 days and had catastrophic results.

During World War II, Leningrad was besieged by Nazi Germany and co-belligerent Finland. The siege lasted from September 1941 to January 1944. The Siege of Leningrad was one of the longest, most destructive, and most lethal sieges of major cities in modern history. It isolated the city from most supplies except those provided through the Road of Life across Lake Ladoga, and more than a million civilians died, mainly from starvation. Many others were eventually evacuated or escaped by themselves, so the city became largely depopulated.

This somewhat symbolically represents that the memory of those terrible days is still alive in people’s minds and that they will never forget of their history.

The most important thing while dealing with this kind of artwork is to try and erase the line that stands as a border between reality and fantasy. This is the so called second reality that lives in our inner beings and the point is to tray and set it free. Without thinking about that the artist gives expression to a reality he observes in the people. But as Mexican critic Luis Leal has said: “If you can explain it, then it’s not magical realism.”
