#10: Ninja Golf

We know ninjas mean stealth and sneakiness, but what possible tactical advantage does he get by playing his golf games at night? The answer to this question, by the way, is “None, although no-one will ever see me embarrassing the honor of my family by doing this”. Also, that clearly isn’t a ninja; that’s the guy with the big sword who Indiana Jones shot in that marketplace in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”.

#9: Final Fight

Unfortunately, despite having ‘Fight’ in the name, the game does not offer you to the chance to pit a man who could only be the result of mixing the DNA of Terrence Stamp, Sylvester Stallone, and a Ghost Rider era Nicholas Cage in a battle to the death against a man who looks uncannily like Saddam Hussein or a thin Stalin.

#8: Ico

Thank God that we don’t have to try and work out the plot of this game via the box art, or we’d all be screwed/insanely confused: “So, it’s a young Michael Cera frolicking around the countryside hitting windmills with planks of wood? What about the ghost girl? Does she tell him to ‘use the force’ everytime he misses his target? No, wait that’s Star Wars….this is a dumb game”.

#7: Courier Crisis

Finally, a game that allows you to accurately simulate what happens to Watson at the end of ‘The Reichenbach Fall’. Was the eponymous courier responsible for preventing Watson from reaching Sherlock in time? Probably not, seeing as this game was made in the early 2000’s by a person who, when they researched about this game, evidently confused ‘couriers’ with ‘wrestlers’. Although, if you live in NYC, you’ll all know that this game is completely based on real-life.

#6: Checkers

On the advice of our lawyers, we aren’t going to make any jokes or insinuate that the older guy in this image is finding more joy in the company of that child than is legally allowed in all states, apart from Alabama and Georgia. You’d have thought King Arthur would object to this as well, but let’s face: that guy looks a bit of a dick, and also, just like Sean Connery.

#5: Bust-A-Move 2

Anybody who knows their Doctor Who history will instantly know that this box art is an exact representation of what the title sequence for the original 1963 series starring William Hartnell was going to look like. However, the bigwigs at the BBC objected (for some reason) at a couple of things, namely the screaming purple face which makes the pictured head look like an oversized blackcurrant, the matchsticks which are holding his guys open (obviously a makeshift homage to A Clockwork Orange), and of course, the fact that in the background there are several more clones of this hideous scene. Pussies.

#4: Ultima V

Remember that dickhead knight who looks like Sean Connery from the paedo-tastic Checkers game above? Well, karma seems to have got him because by the looks of it, he’s about to have the flesh stripped from his bones by the Knights Who Say ‘Ni’. Or some owls in big flowy capes. Whichever, really. Although that frightened worried stance he’s taking might be a result of the electric sparkling probe that lady seem to be trying to insert into his bottom.

#3: Mega Man 2

So many questions need asking of this, so we’ll just lead straight into them. Is the plot of this game focused on Mega Man trying to rescue the rest of his suit from an evil laundrette owner, hence why he only appears to be wearing a sleeve? Has he teamed-up with Iron Man, what with the bright silver suit and everything? Why is he being watched by a giant brain on an altar and an Angry Birds-esque head rendition of the Cheshire Cat? WHY IS HIS ARM A BOWLING PIN?

#2: Super Man

No, it isn’t. Anyone who buys this thinking this is, like, Superman: The Early Years needs to stop deluding themselves right now. From what we can deduce, this game is about Alan Rickman being stalked by the robot from Lost in Space in the middle of Stonehenge, his character trait of which is to fire his gun into the air wildly at random intervals. Also, there’s clearly no ‘S’ on his suit. D- for accuracy.

#1: Ninja Scooter Simulator

Quite frankly, what other game could have reached the top spot of this list? We could spend literally all day poking through this image and dredging up all of the oddities. For instance, where does he hold his sword when he’s riding? Do the handlebars have spikes on as well? And where does he buy those phat rims, from P Diddy’s garage sale? But, we like this game too much to hurt it. We’ll be on eBay looking for a copy if anybody wants us.

1. Bus stop ad that smells of baked potatoes

Imagine waiting for a bus with scent of baking food, spreading about in the air all around you! That is what I call smart advertising. The ‘mccain ready baked jackets’ outdoor campaign brings an interactive, multisensory display to bus shelters throughout the UK.

2. Starry night interactive animation

Greek artist and electrical engineer, Petros Vrellis, has created an interactive animation of Vincent van Gogh’s painting ‘The Starry Night’. Left alone, the visualization sends the paint daubs of the saint-rémy night sky into swirling patterns of motion, governed by the mathematics of particle dynamics. A touch interface allows viewers to deform the image, altering both the particle flow and the sound. when not touched, the visualization will return to its natural state.

3. Creative sweatshop: jelly + light

“Light & Jelly” is series of lamps cast in jelly by Le Creative Sweatshop and then photographed by Fabrice Fouillet. The results of combining this common household food with differing light sources are very colorful and look stunning.

4. Reconfigured cabinet cards

We can thank Alex Gross for turning these stiff cabinet cards from the Victorian era with those unfortunate people with constipated face expressions into lively characters that appear like they have just strung out of some Marvel’s comic book. He takes poor dead bastards who kicked it 100+ years ago and repaints them as pop icons. The result is marvelous!

5. Blind passengers

German designers Julian Appelius and Karen Olze have created ‘Blind passangers’. The screen series consists of six sublimations on polyester to be affixed to the inside of the car window. Figure options include Botticelli’s muse, Simonetta Vespucci, the bust of Nefertiti, Vermeer’s Girl with the pearl earring, Arcimboldo’ ‘Spring’ or two cherubs by Raffael, all depicted at 43 x 36 cm. The blind functions as a shade the true passenger of the vehicle while simultaneously displaying a famous art historical image to passers-by.

6. Lid sid by Luka Or

Israeli designer Luka Or has created the ‘Lid Sid’ for Israeli company Monkey Business. The pot and pan accessory offers one effective way to let off some steam in the kitchen, literally. Sid is a small figure which hangs over the edge of a pot, propping its lid open to let out some excess heat while food is simmering.

7. Chocolate bar smartphone

This year for the Valentine’s Day in Japan, you’ll be able to honor the tradition of buying chocolate to your loved one, but this time, instead of the regular chocolate, you will be able to buy a chocolate bar shaped smart phone, designed by Tadaaki Wakamatsu, that will be released and available for sale on February 14th.

Generally, taxidermy makes me uncomfortable. Just knowing that those are stuffed dead bodies of animals that people keep in their houses, or anywhere else as trophies, is really creepy. But, for Japanese people, taxidermy alone wasn’t weird enough, so they decided to paint these poor rats as Picachu so it would scream Japan more obviously.

I have no idea how does this relate to Japan, or what was the point of this cartoon.

The Jews regarded Lilith as evil. According to Jewish folklore, Lilith was forced by three angels to swear she would not harm mothers and children that wore amulets having the names of those three angels.

In Jewish folklore, from the 8th–10th centuries Alphabet of Ben Sira onwards, Lilith becomes Adam’s first wife, who was created at the same time and from the same earth as Adam. This contrasts with Eve, who was created from one of Adam’s ribs.

Lilith left Adam after she refused to become subservient to him and then would not return to the Garden of Eden after she mated with archangel Samael. The resulting Lilith legend is still commonly used as source material in modern Western culture, literature, occultism, fantasy, and horror.

She appears frequently on prophylactic magical bowls. In this context, she is clearly associated with childbirth (e.g. as a threat), and perhaps also as a succubus against which men need protection. In these bowls she is often countered by invoking the powers of her nemesis angels.

Somewhere between the eighth and tenth centuries, CE, she makes an appearance in a satirical work entitled the Alphabet of Ben Sira. It is here that she is first given what has become her most famous persona: the first wife of Adam (before Eve). In this story, she is created at more or less the same time as Adam, and, as was Adam, out of the ground. Because of this she tries to assert her equality — an assertion which Adam rejects. Refusing to conform to Adam’s desires, she escapes from Eden, and is subsequently replaced by the more subservient Eve (who has less claim to equality, since she was made out of Adam’s side). Having escaped Eden, Lilith takes on her renowned role as baby-stealer and mother of demons.

While it is true that there was a rabbinic tradition that Adam briefly had another wife before the creation of Eve (Genesis Rabbah), there is a great deal of doubt as to whether Lilith had any connection at all to this first wife of Adam story prior the publication of the Alphabet. The satirical nature of the Alphabet casts further doubt on the authenticity of this Lilith connection. But whatever its origins, the connection between Lilith and the first Eve seems to have struck a chord with Jewish folk imagination and it is now an inexorable part of those traditions. It has been able to function both as a ‘woman’s story’ (in which Lilith is a role model for uppity women), and as a patriarchal story (in which we see the dire consequences of being an uppity woman). As a midrash, it also helps to solve a problem that arises from the fact that Genesis 1 has mankind created “male and female,” but when we get to Genesis 2, Adam seems to be alone and in need of a partner.

Kabbalistic literature is occasionally aware of the Alphabet story, but more frequently not. Here Lilith usually appears as a partner for Samael (=Satan), and as the chief feminine expression of the Left (evil) Emanation. In some passages, she participates in the temptation of Eve/Adam, and, after the expulsion, she serves as succubus to Adam, generating hoards of demons from his seed. She is also the personification of temptation, and is for all intents and purposes identified with the woman Folly from the early chapters of Proverbs. In one story, she actually serves as consort to the Holy One.

She also appears in Christian iconography. Most late medieval and renaissance paintings of the temptation of Adam and Eve have portrayed the serpent as having a woman’s head and often torso as well. This is usually referred to by art historians as ‘Lilith,’ but there is no Jewish story which easily corresponds to the pictorial representations (the one exception is Bacharach, ‘Emeq haMelekh 23c-d, but it is confusing, and problematic at best). I am led to presume that there were Christian versions of the Lilith myth in which the identification between her and the Serpent were made explicit. Unfortunately, none of these versions have survived in either text or known folklore.

Lilith enjoyed something of a revival in literature beginning in the mid 19th century. Usually she represents the feminine dark side (the part that men subliminally fear). Carl Jung made use of her as prime expression of the anima in men (the suppressed feme within), and the best monograph on her still belongs to one of Jung’s disciples (Siegmund Hurwitz).

She has also been embraced by many modern, particularly Jewish, feminists. Based mainly, or entirely, on the Alphabet, she is presented as the proto-feminist, willing to sacrifice even the paradise of Eden as the necessary cost of freedom and equality. Of course, her role as baby-stealer is usually down-played (or assigned to a patriarchal layer of the tradition). Some neo-pagan groups have taken up her cause as well, either accepting her dark nature as part of larger sacred reality, or finding the erotic goddess within after removing the clutter of what they argue are patriarchal and monotheistic condemnations.

Finally, she has a place in vampire lore either as the first and most powerful of the vampires, or at least as their queen. She is sometimes presented as either the daughter or the consort of Dracula. In her role as succubus, she has, of course, particular control of nightmares and erotic dreams. She also rules a horde of other succuba and incubi.

I can’t help but wonder, why are we, especially men in the Western culture, obsessed with the female principle and why do we instantly connect it with something evil, dark, and negative? Are we too scared of emancipated, free thinking women? The sin of Lilith seems to be double. She did not only refuse obedience to Adam, but she is also represent all carnal desires, terrestrial and everything physical, which means – a distraction from the spiritual and the worship of God. Even Eve, which was far more obedient to Adam, turned out to be a symbol of falter and the original sin. It is really hard to be a religious woman and to keep any self-respect.

I get what she wanted to say, bu the thing that bothers me is why she made them look so cool, classy and glamorous? It’s almost like she is promoting smoking. She probably wanted to emphasize that aspect of smoking, because many people aside from obvious addictive aspect of smoking, take up this horrible habit because it has the appeal of its performative consumption. Smoking provides you with that mannerism or pose that seems to imbue a smoker with a particular sort of character. It’s almost like putting on a costume.

René François Ghislain Magritte (21 November 1898 – 15 August 1967) was a Belgian surrealist artist. He became well known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images. His work challenges observers’ preconditioned perceptions of reality.

How much do you and members of your family really look alike? Quebec, Canada-based graphic designer and photographer Ulric Collette has created a shockingly cool project where he’s exploring the genetic similarities between different members of the same family. By splitting their faces in half and then melding them together, he creates interesting new people that are sometimes quite normal looking and other times far from it. He calls this series Genetic Portraits.

Roman Holiday
Another of the Mylar Chamber images. The subject is Jhil McEntyre, one of his major muses of the period and the mother of his son, Raphael Aladdin.

Julian Beck, the abstract expressionist painter and poet who, along with his wife Judith Malina, founded the Living Theater. Julian was a tremendous inspiration and mentor to Cohen. Cohen’s film of the Living Theater performances – Paradise Now – stands as an indelible document of the upheavals of the late 1960s.

Jack Smith, the father of New York underground film and theater. Jack was a mentor to Ira, shaping his artistic aesthetic. Here Smith was preparing for a session of reflective Mylar photographing when Ira captured him in Day-Glo makeup and props.

Another Mylar Chamber image used by Life magazine, 26 December 1969, in its special issue to mark the end of the 1960s. The image illustrated a section on drugs which stated that ‘few came as close to explaining the euphoric distortions of hallucinogenics’ as Cohen.

Jimi Hendrix photographed in Ira Cohen’s Jefferson Street loft, from Mylar Chamber, New York, late 1960s. Ira recalled that Hendrix was rather shy and quiet. Hendrix said of Cohen’s Mylar Chamber images: ‘Looking at your pictures is like looking through butterfly wings’

William S Burroughs in Cohen’s New York loft, also part of his Mylar Chamber series. Cohen met Burroughs in Tangier, Morocco in the early 1960s, where he published Burroughs in his Gnaoua magazine.

This was taken during a visit to London in 1982 where Cohen read his poetry and exhibited his images for the first time in the UK at the October Gallery.

Bom Shankar, an ascetic of the Aghori sect
The Aghori’s somewhat taboo ritual worship practices involve some or all of the following: meat eating, alcohol drinking, consumption of beverages and foods with opiates, hallucinogens and cannabis products as key ingredients, cannibalism, residing in cremation grounds and tantric sex rituals. Licking the skull shows the Aghori’s fearlessness in the face of death. Sadhus, yogis and fakirs fascinated Cohen and he amassed a sizeable portrait gallery of what he termed Spirit Warriors

Master Musicians of Joujouka, Mohamed Mokhchan, Mohamed El Attar, Abdullah Ziyat and Abdeslam Dahnoun with the late Mohamed Hamri in Temple Bar, Dublin, 1992. In the early 1960s Cohen met Hamri in Tangier. Hamri was the Moroccan painter who introduced the Beat poets and Rolling Stone Brian Jones to the Sufi trance music of his village, Joujouka. This photograph was taken during the William Burroughs and Brion Gysin art exhibition, the Here to Go Show, at which both Cohen and Hamri exhibited.

William S Burroughs with poet and author of The Basketball Diaries Jim Carroll. Cohen was active in New York’s downtown arts and poetry scene during the 1980s and 90s. He rarely went anywhere without his Pentax Spotmatic – his camera of choice for most of his career.

Nepali Street Urchin
According to Cohen’s collaborator Ira Landgarten ‘this was one of the ubiquitous urchins we regularly saw in the streets of Kathmandu. Already smoking cigarettes at a young age, Ira captured this young boy perfectly.’

Miriam With Violin
Miriam was one of the many young travelers who availed themselves to Cohen’s photo tableaus in Kathmandu, Nepal during his sojourn there in the mid-1970s.

Chillum Baba
Cohen had a close association to the sect of Naga Babas, the Shiva worshiping, cannabis imbibing renunciates of Northern India. He photographed them extensively. They regularly smoked a mixture of tobacco and marijuana in cylindrical clay pipes as part of their ritual worship and their search for bliss.

Petra Vogt, Mutant
Vogt was a German actress working with the Living Theater when Ira met her in New York in the late 1960s. She became his collaborator and muse, spending several years with him in India and Nepal. They were an exotic, theatrical couple, goading each other on and pushing their creative envelopes. She eventually became a nun of the Brahma Kumari sect, an international Hindu spiritual organization.

Allen Ginsberg, Life Mask
Part of Ira Cohen’s Bandaged Poets series, which first began when Ira met his second wife Caroline Gosselin in Amsterdam in the late 1970s. Gosselin had been making ‘life masks’ and Ira began photographing the process of bandaging all the noted poets that crossed their path. Cohen had originally published Ginsberg in Gnaoua in 1964. Cohen would later wryly comment that Allen Ginsberg made sure New York City wasn’t big enough for two bearded Jewish poets.

Here, Cohen references La Malinche, a controversial figure in Mexican history. Ira was extremely well read and often conjured historical and mythological figures in his photographs and poems.

First introduced in 1987 as the main antagonist of the film Predator, the Predator creatures returned in the sequels Predator 2 (1990), Alien vs. Predator (2004), Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), and Predators (2010). The Predators have also been the subject of numerous novels, video games, and comic books, both on their own and as part of the Alien vs. Predator crossover imprint. While a definitive name for the species is not given in the films, the names yautja and Hish have been alternatively used in the expanded universe.

Created by brothers Jim and John Thomas, the Predators are depicted as large, sapient and sentient humanoid creatures who possess advanced technology, such as active camouflage and energy weapons, and are capable of interstellar travel.

Each Gum Blond is 100% chewed Bubblegum on a plywood backing. No paint or dye is used. The color is inherent to the gum – the mixing of color takes place inside the mouth during chewing. Kronenwald has a dedicated team of chewers and prefers the texture of Trident. However, he does not chew gum himself unless he must.

Always a reflection of celebrity culture, A few of his subjects include Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, Britney Spears and Kate Moss.

Kronenwald has received reviews in the Globe and Mail, the National Post and Elle Magazine and his work has appeared on Breakfast Television, MuchMusic, Inside Edition and Good Morning America. His Career is just beginning to flourish with recent solo exhibitions in Toronto, and a group show in London, England.

After moving back home to Tulsa, Oklahoma, she was introduced to the joys of top-quality espresso at Nordaggio’s Coffee, and finally the link between coffee and art connected when she began painting with it.

Soon she learned the art of espresso itself by becoming a barista, though art is now her full-time job. Painting in coffee is a refreshing break from Karen’s work in oils, watercolor, and pencil.

Coffee art is a truly unique art form. It requires a thoughtful and delicate touch. Capturing the depth of these classic works is only possible through a slow and sophisticated process of building layers upon layers of espresso.

I first thought of the idea of painting with coffee while watching rich, red-brown espresso pouring perfectly into my cup. As I enjoyed my hot latte, it occured to me that perhaps I could take my passion for coffee to a deeper level. So I dipped my brush and began painting, and to my delight, it worked beautifully.

Painting with coffee is a completely enjoyable experience…Most often I paint in the coffee shop immersed in the delicious aroma of freshly ground coffee and sounds of low conversation, steam, and grind, which continue to inspire me as I watch my brush add new dimensions to the painting.

I hope that each painting brings you into the same warm atmosphere.

People have been spoofing iconic works of art for decades as a form of creative, or re-creative, expression. Following this time-honored tradition is Tulsa, Oklahoma artist Karen Eland. Her versions of classic masterpieces include works by Matisse and Picasso, Whistler’s Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist’s Mother, more commonly known as “Whistler’s Mother,” and the Sistine Chapel scene with God and Adam by Michelangelo.

However, Eland uses only espresso as paint. That’s right. She doesn’t just drink her coffee–she paints with it. Preferring espresso “straight from the machine,” she sometimes lets it sit out for several days to get the darker tones she sometimes needs.

As if painting with coffee weren’t different enough, she takes the coffee theme one step further by depicting one or more cups of coffee in each of the spoofs.

So far, her most impressive feat is a more serious pair of murals displayed in two of Seattle’s Espresso Vivace coffee houses (see photo of Eland kneeling.) These works measure 3′ x 24′ and took six months each to paint.

Having always been enamored of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling, I asked, “When you painted ‘Creation of Coffee,’ did you dither about who should be pouring the coffee for whom?” She replied,

“Yes, it was tricky. The way their hands were in the original made it seem that Adam could be holding the french press easier, so I came up with the idea that God created the coffee bean, then created man to have creativity, then man applied that and offers it back to God.”

So, God said, “Let there be coffee.” And it was good, very, very good.
