Miss Arab world 2009

Female Arab contestants have competed during “Miss Arab World 2009″ pageant in Cairo, November 11, 2009.
That’s not the usual beauty pageant… At least it’s not a beauty pageant that we in the West are used to. These ladies don’t strip down to their bikinis, don’t have plastic in their breasts, lips, etc. But somehow, they still manage to look nice and be beautiful. What do you think about this? Do you find them beautiful, or do you think this is all too bizarre and weird?

Hey Arabs WAKE UP, u all have talents and potential but for a few fundamentalists, come out of the Shell and be with the world. How LONG are u all going to be in the Burqa. Your men enjoy with the ladues of other countries and the restrictions are only with the ladies. Is that Justice?

  • Mohan Raj

Hey Arabs, come out of the shell and see where the world is. Come of your burqa u people have talents, Beauty and potential, Forget the fundamentalists and be open to to the world.

    • Nihal

we r not living in a shell as u believe,,, we actually know about life and the world as much – and may be more – as everybody else….. Is having our women going around almost naked will make us SMART people open to the world???? That’s not true…. I’m veiled and i’m studying engineering, i know 4 languages and i know what’s going on in the world as much as u do!!! my veil didnt prison my brain :) )
Restrictions are not only put on ladies,, it’s on both men and women…. but people do wrong, right??
our religion respects women, that’s why we are told to cover up… a woman should not be exposed to every single man in the world to watch her body…

  • http://klingpost.com/ Anila Arshad

Wow she so much beautiful and pretty. nice images collection and great information i need to read more about her……

  • NOURDINE

se beau mais sa ne représente pas la beauté du monde arabe

    • http://1 Haytham

Been to Arab countries, and let me tell you that.. these are not beautiful compared to what i have seen there.. the problem is that most girls would refuse to go in public competitions like this .. so unfair

      • Han

        Agree!

      • Nihal

that’s not unfair….. A lady should be covered and protected, not exposed to every man to watch her body.. and that’s what our religion as muslims tells us…it is for our benefit,,, A woman should be respected!!

        • Abigail

So you “respect” women so much you will beat them to death in honor killings? You essentially hide them in bed sheets, treat women like property, keep them uneducated so they can’t defend themselves, and rule by Sharia Law which gives women absolutely no rights?

You’re definitely right. I know any culture that marries off 10 year old girls to 60 year old men so old muslim pervs can get their rocks off definitely “respects” women.

          All of you are disgusting.

  • http://www.arabspots.com MARTIN

nihal though ur comment isn’t understood 100% but i agree with ya, the ladies shouldn’t be exposed n naked to every single person in the entire world to be considered a smart sexy n powerful lady i have a total respect to ladies who wear burqa n those kinda stuff means covered i really do, they say that the muslim people dont respect women but we do tell me how do u do? by showing up ur sister wife or mom’s body to everyone :D thats silly u know i’ll give ya guys an example outta this when u see a sexy girl shows her body wearing sexy dress how would u look at her? would u look at her by respect? well i dont think so u would say man this girl is so sexy hope i can get laid with her on the other hand when u see a covered girl u would have nothin but a total respect for her anyways i dont have to explain to nobody but i explained just to clarify :]

    peace

  • Salma

Thanks Martin for Understanding…I appreciate it :)

  • Carolin

@Martin: I’m not an eloquent person but I find your comment quite stupid so I’m going to try my best to tell you why.

    1. “the ladies shouldn’t be exposed n naked to every single person in the entire world to be considered a smart **** n”
Are you comparing this beauty pageant to the one that usually take place in western countries? If you are then you should know that a beauty pageant has nothing to do with smarts. The only thing those people need is looks money and white teeth. It Is called a beauty pageant for a reason. Sure, you don’t have to prance around in a bikini for people to notice how beautiful you are but it is a part of the contest. If it irks you so much then send them a letter and tell them to ban the bikinis.

    2. “say that the muslim people dont respect women but we do tell me how do u do? by showing up ur sister wife or mom’s body to everyone .”
It might be your clumsy wording but I’m reckoning it’s not. You talk like the brother, husband and son has the right to decide what a woman can or cannot wear. Like they own her body just because they are related to her and they are men. Something that I find utterly despicable. Women and men are equals, my brother has no right to decide over my body, neither does my dad, or my future husband. I am my own person and I have the right to show off any part of my body, within the limits of the law, if I so wish. Please get that through your head.

    3. You might not think that a woman that shows off her ankles, knees, and heaven forbid maybe even some thigh, deserves respect but that is your skewed thinking. If I have to cover everything up, to the point where I feel like I lose my identity just so that i can get some respect from the male gender then there is a serious problem with the opposite sex. Not with me wanting to express who I am through what I wear.

I can’t speak for the guys but as a female that’s growing up in a country where men and women are equals and where I’ve been raised by parents with the same values I only feel a pang of guilt when I see a burqa clad woman. I see what they’re wearing as a sign of oppression, injustice and insecure guys that need to grow some balls and sense.

  • salma

    heyyyyyyy

i wanna say smthng plz iam a musilm and proud and wanna tell a story

guy asked a Muslim: Why do girls cover up their body and hair? Muslim guy smiled and got two sweets, he opened the first one and kept the other one closed. He threw them both on the dusty floor and asked the guy: If I asked u 2 take 1 of the sweets which 1 u’ll choose? The Man replied: The covered one. Then Muslim said that’s how we treat and see our women

is that make sens ?????? yeah i agree with that no one would want the dusty sweet

    • neurol23

that’s just bullshit. the fact, that some woman does not cover all her body, does NOT make her dirty.

maybe one day muslims will grow out of middle ages and realize, that “god” that imposess such ridiculous orders, like stoning people to death, it’s not somebody worth following.

  • MARTIN

    @”Carolin”

oh u know what there is noone more stupid on the planet than yourself u idiot do u think for one second that god sent u to impress the people? are u freakin kiddin me? are u freakin idiot? have u ever thought or asked yourself why was i born? where am i going after dying? why adam and eve were sent to earth? no i dont think that u know all those things if u know something that would be the model, fashion plus impressing the people around u

    • Carolin

@Martin: I’ve never claimed that I was smart, I eve n started of by saying I was bad with words but calling me the most idiotic person on this planet is a bit much, don’t you think? It took me a while to formulate my reply, I even spell checked it and revised it several times (all in the hopes of making it easier for you to understand) and you have the gall to call me the most idiotic person on this planet? If I cared about what you thought of me I’d probably be offended.

I’m an atheist so I don’t believe in god and if I’ve ever asked myself why I was born then I can thank my biology teacher for teaching me about the sperm and the egg.

I don’t really know what’ll happen to my body when I die. Not saying that my body is “me”, what makes me “me” is located in my brain somewhere and when I drown or suffocate or get impaled by a sharp wooden stake my brain won’t get enough oxygen and it will die. When that dies I will cease to exist. I thought I’d donate my organs but that’s only possible when brain death is in the picture. If that doesn’t happen I’ll just donate my body to some medical place and let the students dissect me into small pieces.

Have you ever thought of the fact that if Adam and Eve were sent down here and they did populate the planet then their children had sex with each other? And when Adam and Eve’s grandchildren were born even They copulated and so on and so forth. Generation upon generation of incest, and we all know what happens to the gene pool when inbreeding occurs over and over again.

@Nihal: I didn’t say the people running the pageants are after money though I’m sure they wouldn’t be hosting such an expensive event if they kept losing money. I said the contestants had to be beautiful, have white teeth and loads of money (employing coaches, buying pretty dresses and devoting many hours to each competition can’t be done without money.) The difference is that prostitution is accepting payment for sex, are those contestant having sex for cash? I don’t think so. Saying that they are prostitutes is the same as saying an athlete is a prostitute because they compete for cash, clad in aerodynamic clothing in the hopes of winning a prize.

A beauty pageant with willing women, women that have dreamed of being crowned miss universe since they popped out of the birth canal and a brothel with unwilling prostitutes isn’t the same thing.

The word owner should be replaced with the word employer and the word tells should be replaced with the word expects. A firefighter is expected to save houses, climb trees to rescue kittens and stay fit so he can keep hosing down burning buildings to the best of his ability. A beauty pageant contestant is expected to prance around in a bikini, a gown, have a skill, answer a question etc. It is a part of the job. A job that they can choose to pursue if they so wish because their fathers, brothers and uncles don’t treat them like property that needs to be locked up and put away. They get the choice, and that is what I call freedom. It is their body and not their uncles or their fathers.

It can’t be freedom to cover up when you don’t have the choice of not covering up.

@ottoman: is caving under peer pressure honorable? They know that if they don’t dress a certain way they’ll be looked down upon so they choose to go with the flow instead of braving the heat. How is that honorable and civilized? Civilized; Showing evidence of moral and intellectual advancement. Isn’t one of the more morally advanced ideas of our society that women and men are equal? if you believe that men have the right to choose what you’re supposed to wear then how can that be advancement?

      • XiaoHei

You’ve already overloaded his little brain with so many new ideas. Looking at the way he types / writes, makes it obvious that he is new to all this stuff. Please have mercy on them :-) )

Sad that the Muslim tells about the covered vs uncovered sweet without even recognizing that he demonstrates an unacceptable attitude toward women – mindless possessions, like a candy. This would have been unacceptable in the USA in colonial times. It is not respect that causes the men to force women to cover up – it is vicious male domination.

The girls look fine covered up, and I would just as soon my wife and daughter not wear bikinis. But this is their decision, not mine. I get to decide what I wear, and they decide what they wear because they are not my possessions, my “sweets”, they are my equals as free human beings.

If Muslims – or any other peoples – insist on treating women as possessions, they must be opposed by men who have the self-confidence and knowledge to recognize women as our equals. Wife beating or other treatment of women as property should be punished severely for Muslims and for everyone else. Rights of women to be treated as equal human beings must trump religious or cultural freedom – for everyone. The USA has plenty of ignorant cowardly males that are not Muslim that beat wives – all should be punished severely.

  • Gally

@carolin : I like the way you presented the issue on 2. : as far as the religious texts say the woman doesn’t belong to herself as men do, she does belong to her father who “gives” her to a husband, etc.
If I was a muslim in a modern country, I would feel uneasy about this, as there has been an evolution within the common ideas that make the notion of equality between men and women quite usual (even if yet still not real…).

What makes me uneasy is the fact that nowadays in modern countries muslim men still think they know better what is Good for women, whereas (by covering them) they act like men cannot naturally act correctly (when they see a non completely covered woman)…

Wierd and paradoxal isn’t it ?

    • Nihal – A Muslim & Proud

ohhh and what do u do when u see a woman wearing a very short dress for example???
“….as far as the religious texts say the woman doesn’t belong to herself as men do, she does belong to her father who “gives” her to a husband, etc….” who told u that????

  • Nihal – A Muslim & Proud

    @ carolin:

In your first point, u r defending ur beauty pageaonts.. u said the ppl running this pageaonts r only after money.. let me ask u something, what’s the difference between that and prostitution?? I beleive it is the same!! someone using a woman to get money.. and now ur father, brother or husband can’t tell u to cover up,, but it’s okay for u if a stupid owner or whatever tells u to go almost naked with a bikini on the runaway for every one to watch ur body and decide the number u deserve!!!! what if a woman said I’m free and im not wearing that bikini,,??? she’ll be kicked out…… So thats what u call ur freedom?????
By the way,,, no body really forces a muslim woman to wear the burqa and related stuff,,,, manyyyyyy – and i mean many – women choose to wear covered clothes…..
If u think it’s freedom to show off ur body,,,, and we it’s our freedom to cover up!!!!

    • neurol23

again it’s just your twisted muslim way of seeing things.

women that attend beauty pageans contests doesn’t do it because some men ordered it. i know it’s a new concept for you, but women can actually do something just by themselves. they don’t need any men to give them orders. women who attend beauty pageant contests usualy do it for the money (which is absolutely ok). but most of the women don’t attend these contest at all (which is also absolutely ok).

  • rob

if a muslim girl wants to wear muslim clothing why is it our western “free to do anything” liberated countries not supportive of that? why isit that countries such as France and others are banning the thier choice of clothing?

further more why is it that us non muslims make it difficult for them to wear their own choice of clothing? shouldn’t we have respect for any person regardless of their clothing and have respect for ones choice of clothing?

i understand where muslim woman are coming from when they say they rather dress modestly and cover up because they they dont like to be treated like other woman, who men address as hot ass, the best way for you guys to understand muslim woman in ninja suits is to actually talk to them, befriend one and you will understand, i was bias once upon a time.

    • neurol23

stop whining. muslim countries like saudi arabia, iran or afghanistan don’t allow almost anything. when they get at least to the level of personal freedoms of poland (most religious and therefore backward country in europe), then the muslims can complain.

and if they don’t like it in europe, than they are more then welcome to go back to their country of origin, where they can be hanged or stoned as much as they please.

  • ottoman sultan

Western women are the most abused and exploited women in the world. Some of you gawk at these women for covering up and blah blah blah about burqas, and how uncivilized they are–the truth is, they are more civilized than any other group for the fact the woman’s identity and honor is taken into account. Yeah, there are nut-jobs in the Muslim world who kill women because they feel they are superior to them, but that’s not a Muslim principle…they are criminals and should be treated as such. Some cultures are like that…but thats NOT ISLAM–learn about Islam before you comment. These women are beautiful –they don’t need to flaunt themselves like mere pieces of meat to the wolves, and their honor is taken into account .

Arab women in the pics look beautiful. They are all women and God created them in His own Image and so they look attractive and beautiful.See Miss,Saudi Arabia, the winner.See her Smile. They cannot be lessened in any way to other women in other parts of the World.
Wearing burqa by Muslim women should be left to their sweet will and not made mandatory in the name of religious texts. Times are changing and religious texts should also undergo change.Customs, traditions,if they are inhibitive, should be modified.
Muslim men can see women of all other religions but their women should inevitably wear burqa.Do you think this is NICE ?Is there anybody to take this? leave alone Muslim women.

    • Nihal – A Muslim & Proud

Dear Sreedhar,,, Times are changing but relgious texts can’t change!!! Islam texts works for all times,,,and it’s all for our good and world’s peace…
u said muslim men can see women of all other religions,, yes they can see, but they shouldnt LOOK!!! Men in islam are prohibited to look at other women rather than his wife, and they are sinned doing so!!!
women are women in all religions, everywhere in this world.. & they are always attracting to men… God knows what he created,, and he wants women to be respected & protected as any precious thing,,, that’s why we were told to cover up…..
I dont know about that Burqa thing,, but arabs dont wear Burqa!!! Afghans do….

what’s better – a normal movie, or movie shown on television with it’s screen covered, so nothing can be seen?
what’s better – a normal book, or book covered under blanket so nothing can be red?
what’s better – a glass of wine, or closed bottle that can’t be opened?

…not that any of this stories or your stories had any relevancy to burqas of hijabs, which are just plain stupid.

as per the above strings of comments, … the fault lies majorly in the title of the event…
Islam is a religion of principles which has been set and its meant for all times.
    Allah (SWT) instructed that

Say! Oh Believer () I do not worship what you worship () nor do you worship what I worship. () Nor am I worshipping what you have worshipped () neither will you worship what I worship. () To you is your religion and to me is my Religion Q109vs1-6.

Islam is a religion of submission to Allah who in is words has stated that he has “perfected the religion and does not expect any improvisation for any one”….

In my own opinion the above event is not organised for islam and will not be accepted by islam.

This event was not a beauty peageont. It was about brains and knowledge… I beleive that doesn’t affect the religion badly…. It was even open for arab muslims and christians too…!!

      • Nuhruhdyn

… it cool if it was about brains and knowledge…
in that case the title of the event should not have been Miss Arab World…. as most people would not consider the substance of the event but rather the form…

Me, I want to focus on one thing: In these photos, women look real, each one with her own body figure, her own colors, her own hairstyle, her own REAL face expression, they are not the products of a mass-production model cloning machine. I admire and miss this diversity, that you won’t find in the parades of anorexic clones that most people call “beauty contests”.

P.S. In my opinion, the Supreme Being of this universe, name it God, Allah or whatever you like, should have more serious worries and visions about our world than if women must have their head covered or not!

  • Amoon

if you go back to the reall Christianity, and Judaism the women used to cover thier face too veiles was been konwn before Islam
what we have now is fake Christianity, Judaism rules

  • Abigail

As a female I definitely think you can have a physical beauty pageant without a woman hanging all out in a bikini. I also am glad to see none of these women (to our knowledge) haven’t been going under the knife. From the few photos I see here there were some really facially beautiful women who competed.

Now, here’s where I am really questioning this thing. How in the heck did Miss Saudi Arabia win?!? She is the ugliest one there facially! Not to mention she looks like she’s hitting 40. Just from the first photo or two I kept picking who I thought would win and clearly Miss SA would lose. I’m actually shocked this woman won. Come on! Some of these other countries had women who have gorgeous faces and hair.

    • Gerry

I agree, not the top choice, at least by just looking these photos. But first, we don’t know the exact “rules” by which this contest was held, I mean is it only appearance that counts or is there some kind of mental test, or is considered to be the “best housewife”, or don’t know what else may matter.
Second, I’m not deep into Arabian culture but I know that the “standard of beauty” is not always the same as in our western world. To put it simply, not everyone loves skinny, blond girls. Watch any Arabian movie (I believe secret services won’t put you in their suspects list for that!!) and you’ll feel it from the first minute. Same in some Asian cultures, girls do their best to protect themselves from sun rays because pale skin is highly adored there, while in the other side of the ocean, solarium tanning is a massive hit. So, probably we may not agree about Miss Arabia finalist but probably Arabians would have different opinion, according to their own “standards”

  • the_same_old_debate

i consider myself open minded and i always like hearing about new ideas cuz i grew up with ppl of many religious backgrounds, including atheists. the ppl who are fighting here are ridiculous.
    1. clearly no one is going to change anyone’s mind by starting to insult and belittle them.
    2. how many have actually studied law, specifically shariah law, for their degree to know that it grants no rights to women? i think that most of the comments here are simply hearsay trying to be sold as fact.

i consider myself as an equal to any man…my father even encouraged me to pursue an engineering degree when i was having doubts about doing mechatronics, which most of the guys in my batch are doing. and my father would never give me away to a husband! he’d let me choose the man i love and he wants me to get a PhD and a job before even considering marriage.

the culture you refer to is the ancient arab culture, not the modern islamic one. i feel like its important to distinguish between the two cuz they are completely different.

ps. have mercy, im only 18…lol.
