You are certainly right that Islamic countries were FAR more civilized than Europe at that time. However, Islam didn’t really bring civility to much of Europe, except perhaps for parts of Spain (and maybe a few other areas). Mostly, a resurgence of ancient Greek ideas brought Europe out of the Dark Ages, into the Renaissance.

Your thoughts about evolution are even further off. You seem to make all your decisions based on the idea that your religion is 100% infallible. You seem to believe that no holy writings can be wrong. You don’t find out what the facts really are, and then see if it fits with your religious beliefs. You think that your beliefs are facts, and if reality disagrees, then REALITY ITSELF must be wrong. That’s insane. Don’t you at least understand that religious writings can be misunderstood?

Evolution is observable and repeatable. It HAS been done in a lab, many times. You can WATCH it happen. You can easily see it through generations of animals in nature, and in a lab. My friend, why do you have a tailbone, nipples, wisdom teeth, and appendix? Try reading about the theory of evolution. Read about it from a non opinion based, non religiously motivated source. It almost certainly is very different than what you believe it is. God and evolution are not mutually exclusive. Both can be real at the same time.

One important thing to think about: In some countries, it is perfectly okay for women and men to walk around topless or even naked. The body is not considered evil or bad, and some of these people feel that Americans (for example, I’m American, so I mention America) are puritanical, repressed and prudish for wanting people to cover their bodies in public. But when they come to OUR country, we expect them to abide by OUR social mores, and when we go to THEIR countries, many of us continue to follow our own social mores despite the fact that those standards are much more conservative than the social requirements in those places.

Why then is it so difficult for us as Americans to understand those countries whose social rules are more strict than our own? Just as we don’t want people to do nude sunbathing on our public beaches, there are other countries who feel that we show too much skin and would prefer for us to cover up a little more when we come to their country.

I’ve seen ads from other countries that were photoshopped to crop out or cover or remove partial nudity so that it would acceptable in the US. Why then are we shocked that other countries do the same?

People come to the US, we expect them to dress modestly, but we criticize those countries who ask us to do the same by THEIR standards when we visit their nations.

When we go to other, more liberal countries, we often continue to follow our own standards of modesty, but again we criticize those who come to the US from more conservative nations when they continue to hold onto their stricter social rules instead of being more ‘free’ and ‘liberal’ in the US.

We need to think about these things and be willing to accept that not all people follow the same rules.

I live in Bahrain, a little island in the middle east and some record stores import cd’s n music form Saudi Arabia since they have a huge market due to the GYnormous population and unfortunately this is very true and real.
Even in some magazines that pass thru there before they get to Bahrain. By the time they get here..yes mariah carey would be wearing trousers,lol

You are ignoring a whole case and a whole era which had different traditions than the 21st centuary traditions, you are ignoring the fact that such marriage in such age in such era was a very natural thing and a general phenomena, it was completely normal and acceptable by all communities back then, and whole loads of similar actions was happening even before him, during his time and even after, and it wasn’t a wrong thing from the start. Mohamed -peace be upon him, was born in a society in which the early marriage was very acceptable and natural, and even more it wasn’t for *pleasure*.

Seems like I’ve spent about half a lifetime in Saudi Arabia (from about 1992 til 2002). They censor most pictures, ads, product boxes, movies…you name it. Their censoring device of choice is a sharpie; except, of course movies, where the censoring device is a jarring loss of dialog and jumping of scenes.

Most of the censoring is just funny, or pathetic, but when you look inside of a “31 Flavors” ice cream parlor and see men sitting in soft booths eating their cones in air conditioned comfort, while the abaya clad ladies have a walk up window to order from and a busy street corner to sit on you begin to see the tragedy of it all. Then you see signs in shop windows stating that women must be accompanied by their father, husband, or twelve year old son in order to enter. And you learn that that twelve year old boy can legally drive but his mother cannot…not ever. And that being with a member of the opposite sex that is not your immediate relative is potentially a capital offense. Then you see in the news that, rather than allow school girls to exit a burning building without their faces covered, it is preferable that they burn up in the fire.

It is at some point you see quite clearly that, not only is this no longer Kansas (Toto), but somewhere along the way we have left the state of sanity in the rear view window.

We have BASICALLY at least 5 prayers (Salah) a day that we must practice – other than that we have all day long to pray and connect with Allah in many different ways, whether it’s Salah or other. We don’t need a median between us and Allah it’s a direct connection, no human being controls this relationship – no human being has anything to do with you being forgiven or accepted. You don’t have to stop your normal life in order to be RELIGIOUS – you can live your life while being religious and close to Allah. You are welcomed any time to ask for forgiveness as long as you believe in Allah.

Every action a Muslim does, should be intended to get closer to Allah, Islam is the religion of work, it organizes the whole life, it is a constitution that manages every aspect of the human life. Work is connecting and getting closer to Allah, Sleeping is intended for getting closer to Allah because we are sleeping to get powerful for a next day full of goodness and getting closer to Allah and participating in developing this World that Allah asked us to do, and spreading the goodness around the whole world.

Even the time I am replying back and writing this now, is to get connected more and closer even more to Allah, because it is not about the writing it self, it is what this writing can cause you or anyone who reads this to open Google and search honestly for what Islam means, and later it would change his life to better, so he can be a better person and make this world a better place. It is not about words, but what would be consequences of these words. We are not writing and commenting here because we want to shout or satisfy a need of shouting or just be in a position of attack or defend, it is to make this world a better place, we won’t lose our temper and nothing will affect our beliefs, because they are strongly built and we do trust enough in them, logically and spiritually.

I think this is good advice, however I think it is important to mention that Muslims believe that the only true version of the Koran is the one written in Arabic, not the English translation. This makes it extremely difficult to judge the religion by the book. And the fact that Mohammed had a child wife makes him lose credibility in my eyes. According to external sources about Mohammed’s teachings, he also condoned wife-beating. Not a man whose teachings I would readily embrace.

Look joey, indeed muslims (we) do believe that the (only precious) true describable version of Koran is the original one written in Arabic, however there are LOTS of facts you can conclude from the other translated-for-different-languages books, where only (characters) are translated, but not the words meanings nor contexts which are deeply rooted in the original language (Arabic) nor lots of other sides even the Arabic native speakers needs guidance to realize .

There is a miraculous nature of the Koran text it self, for example; why a specific word said by Allah, why a combination of words are made like that, why a some word preceded the other one, and more and lots of sides that are related to the Arabic language’s it self and it’s grammars and contexts, and won’t be shown because it is only characters that are translated and it is the personal effort of every translator to describe as much meaning as his vocabulary can do (Which in the Arabic side, Allah is who choosed the Arabic Vocabulary). and All of These textual miracles needs to be enlighten by guidance for even Arabic Speakers, so what you do need to know are the explanations of the text, translated from the Arabic Translation (Tafsir in Arabic) it self, not an explanation for the English written words, hope you do understand what I mean.

When people get to know the initials by the English one, and then try to know ONE even textual describing miracle, you will end up… smiling, for how LITTLE we are smart compared to the GREATNESS of Allah’s miracle you will be realized.

The people you see in the media with all those hate messages, they’re not true Muslims. True Muslims don’t go around killing people”in the name of Allah” . In the Qur’an it says that you should respect other nationalities even if you don’t see eye to eye on what ever topic. EVERY SINGLE Muslim should pay Zakat (money for charity) even if it’s just a small donation. I am non-muslim and have lived here in middle-east for most of my life.Its true in Saudi they censor the album,mags and ads too.Apart from that the people are very humble compared to what is portrayed in the western media,BBC,Fox,CNN,etc.They always show terrorists with guns as muslims and extremist muslims with banners-F*** america bullcrap .Thats what they want to show you.But do they show you the peaceful muslim families?They are kind and have much better culture then the west.I have lived with muslims here,they are humans not barbarians as shown.And the women here dress like westerners and have basic rights like men,they drive to and have say in political matters.Only in Saudi the laws are stringent because its sacred country for muslims.The women were the abaya and Hijab not because they are forced to but they choose to.Since the 9/11 muslims have been blamed for everything and have been given a bad name.Unless you have lived here (this goes out to Dr.music and any anti-islam)you have no right to judge them.And learn to respect other faiths

I have the “KSA version” of the Butterfly Album, and yes the above images (well, at least the butterfly album) ain’t fake (my dad bought my copy in KSA when I was young, and i found out only through this page that mariah was really half naked in the album cover. pardon my ignorance).

I’m an American (non-Muslim, if that matters), and I really like what they did with her. Forget all the hate speech and debate. Different cultures and communities have diferent standards. Get over it.

She’s still a really beautiful woman — making her more modest doesn’t change that. I’m hardly a prude, and it doesn’t mean I don’t think she’s hot, but really think modesty gives a more wholesome beauty to people as human beings and not merely desirable objects. And they did it nicely — I would be surprised if Mariah disapproves.

Two thoughts:
Can you tell more about a woman (or man) by their body or by their smile and eyes?

These graphic modifications are rather amateurish, but one of the pictures is genuinely offensive. Why would they get rid of “I love NY” on her shirt? Obviously, she lives in the United States and she lives in New York. Is it inconceivable that she might like the place where she lives? I don’t care how much it increases sales. It’s DISGUSTINGLY hypocritical. If you enjoy some of US culture, then don’t act like the US is entirely evil.

The Saudi government actively trades and works with the US, and the US does the same. (George W. Bush downright humiliated himself trying to impress the Saudis. I’m a Christian,but I like to think I respect all religions who live in peace. I also believe in the Buddhist tenet of the ‘The Middle Way’.While I think wearing head to toe covering in a climate that is very hot is not healthful or sensible,in contrast I think Western performers DO sometimes go too far the other way in selling sensuality as part of their image.While the photoshop is rather crudely done,it does point out that Ms Carey has a tendency to drop her gear at every opportunity.Would it really kill her to leave something to the imagination? For the most part,the censors have avoided making her look frumpy,and she still looks like a vibrant,attractive young woman. I do wish more female performers would rely on their vocal talents,not their curves to sell albums.Remember when artists like Joni Mitchell,Carole King & Carly Simon ruled the airwaves? Beautiful women all,but they seldom wore outfits that were so scanty.So while censorship of any kind doesn’t fill me with joy,covering up Ms Carey’s charms leaves me to ask: why does she have to show so much in the first place?

What I know for sure is that’s common to “modify” pictures in gulf countries.I’m a moroccan and I used to read their magazines(yes, they do that for some pics inside!).I’ve always noticed the t-shirt “effect” every time I’m reading their magazines.
In Morocco (north africa), it’s different, there’s no such censorship (except for only one conservative magazine….However,for this one, the retouches aren’t that obvious.I mean they try to chose the right pics with not too much nudity.Except this magazine,no one do that!)
Well I think that they should’ve required an adapted covers for their areas instead of doing such ridiculous stuff.
