National Geographic (Wild) and other similar TV channels regularly telecast the behaviour of the lions. What is interesting in the case of cat family is that, immediately after mating, the female will turn upside down upping her legs and lower back with a view to retain or absorb the male sperm. This is,by instinct, meant to perpetuate their race through procreation. Humans, particularly the civilized animals, do not act this way in many cases.

The very next photo in the series ought to have shown the female trying to swat the male lion’s head off- literally. The penis of the lion (and of most cats, actually) has backward facing barbs, so that when he thrashes about, and then withdraws, causes the female a good deal of very real pain and distress (that is why he has to hold her down by grasping the back of her neck with his teeth, and what that very unhappy face is really all about). The second he has his release, she is so taken with the pain of the moment, she turns on him and hits him with her paw, with all the might she has left.

As bad as that may sound, then you also must consider that the female lion mates about once every 15 minutes during the 72 hour period of her heat, which can also explain the exhaustion and look of sheer happiness, after a wee bit of rest.

It really bodes we humans not to be too anthropomorphic, putting too much of a human face on the very real-life experiences of other earthly creatures. Like as not, it diminishes the reality of what they go actually have to go through…
