As the legendary award-winning actor Jack Nicholson turns 75 this weekend, we’ve decided to look back at some of his most memorable movie roles and some iconic and often quoted lines.

1. Easy Rider, as George Hanson

THE LINE: “This used to be a helluva good country. I can’t understand what’s gone wrong with it.”

THE MOVIE: A 1969 biker drama starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, this misadventure movie was a seminal film in the counterculture movement of the time. Nicholson’s character is a drunken lawyer who leaves square-dom behind…at the same moment the rest of the country does. Nicholson got his first Oscar nomination for the part.

2. Five Easy Pieces, as Robert Dupea

THE LINE: “I move around a lot, not because I’m looking for anything really, but ’cause I’m getting away from things that get bad if I stay.”

THE MOVIE: In this 1970 drama, Nicholson plays a former classical musician—who can easily play the five pieces possibly referenced in the title—who works on an oil field but has to come to terms with his hoity-toity family, the people and life he ran away from. Nicholson was nominated for an Oscar for the role.

3. Chinatown, as Jake Gittes

THE LINE: “What can I tell you, kid? You’re right. When you’re right, you’re right, and you’re right.”

THE MOVIE: The most famous line in Chinatown—“Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown.”—is actually said to Nicholson rather than by him, but the 1974 private-detective movie has plenty of runners-up. Nicholson plays said detective, hired to investigate an affair (or so he thinks), and was nominated for an Oscar for the part.

4. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, as R.P. McMurphy

THE LINE: “I must be crazy to be in a loony bin like this.”
THE MOVIE: In this 1975 classic, Nicholson plays a criminal who pleads insanity but gets more than he bargained for when he’s sent to an Oregon mental institution ruled with an iron fist by the terrifying Nurse Ratched. His ringleader character tries to get the patients to rebel, but the situation is even crazier than he had imagined. Nicholson won his first Oscar for the part.

5. The Shining, as Jack Torrance

THE LINE: “Heeere’s Johnny!”

THE MOVIE: This 1980 horror film, based on a Stephen King story and directed by Stanley Kubrick, remains one of Nicholson’s most famous roles—and the movie, in which he plays a writer losing his mind in a remote hotel, is full of contenders for his most famous quote.

6. Terms of Endearment, as Garrett Breedlove

THE LINE: “I don’t know what it is about you, but you do bring out the devil in me.”

THE MOVIE:Nicholson plays the astronaut neighbor (and more) to Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger’s mother-daughter protagonists in this 1983 tearjerker. But, even though he’s not part of the central duo, romantic affairs taking backseat (in a convertible) to familiar ones. Nicholson won an Oscar for his role.

7. Prizzi’s Honor, as Charley Partanna

THE LINE: “Do I ice her? Do I marry her?”

THE MOVIE:This 1985 crime comedy stars Nicholson as a hit man in love with another assassin (Kathleen Turner) and who must contemplate the essential dilemma summed up in this line. Nicholson was nominated for an Oscar for the role.

8. The Witches of Eastwick, as Daryl Van Horne

THE LINE: “Well, if that’s how you feel about it, then that’s how you feel about it. Is that how you feel about it?”

THE MOVIE: This 1987 horror/comedy film, based on a John Updike novel, stars Nicholson as a mysterious man who appears in an uptight New England town and begins to seduce three single women who don’t yet know their own witchy powers. Not that Nicholson’s seductive stranger doesn’t have his own powers, too.

9. Batman, as the Joker

THE LINE: “Nice outfit.”

THE MOVIE: In the 1989 installment of the Batman films, Nicholson plays the smiling, psychotic villain opposite Michael Keaton’s Dark Knight. Although the Batman-baddie stable is a crowded one, Nicholson did a memorable turn in the plaid pants of evil—and managed to wear that ensemble while being fully underwhelmed by the batsuit.

10. A Few Good Men, as Col. Nathan R. Jessup

THE LINE: “You can’t handle the truth!”

THE MOVIE: The 1992 military procedural thriller stars Tom Cruise as a naval lawyer in over his head, but the most memorable moment of the movie goes to Nicholson’s unhinged Colonel character, who gets to say one of the actor’s most famous lines ever and for whom he received another Oscar nod.

11. As Good as It Gets, as Melvin Udall

THE LINE: “You make me want to be a better man.”

THE MOVIE:In a 1997 romantic turn, Nicholson plays opposite Helen Hunt as a misanthrope who discovers what it’s like to actually care about another person for once. In his attempt to woo Hunt’s waitress character, he utters the line that can turn any man from “eww” to “aww.” Nicholson won an Oscar for the role.

12. About Schmidt, as Warren Schmidt

THE LINE: “I know we’re all pretty small in the big scheme of things, and I suppose the most you can hope for is to make some kind of difference, but what kind of difference have I made? What in the world is better because of me?”

THE MOVIE:As a retiring insurance man traveling from Nebraska to Colorado in an RV, a bedraggled and lonely Nicholson leads this 2002 film and scored another Oscar nomination for the role. The physical and emotional journey of the title character provides plenty of fodder for insightful dialogue.

13. The Departed, as Frank Costello

THE LINE: “When I was growing up, they would say you could become cops or criminals. But what I’m saying is this. When you’re facing a loaded gun, what’s the difference?”

THE MOVIE: In this Boston-set 2006 mob drama, directed by Martin Scorsese, Nicholson plays a gang leader who lets a police mole into the organization—at the same time that he has placed his own mole with the police. And those moles aren’t even the only ones playing for both sides.

Pop Heroes and Villains Transformed in Vintage Family Photos

Is there a better way of addressing your geekiness then transforming superheroes, villains and characters form popular movies into people in family vintage photos? I seriously doubt it. Marvellini brothers find this to be incredibly amusing, and so do I. The best part are massive, ornate and antique frames. They seem to bring the whole composition in ton. If you ever wondered what Batman’s great-great-grandfather looked like, you can find the answer to that question here. We all know superheroes are orphans, but still many are well aware of their origins and you can exclusively have a glance at their ancestors here.

The way I see it, this Andrey Pavlov guy must be some sort of ant whisperer, because he takes these (probably the craziest) pictures of ants you’ll ever see. And he does it with out using CG or Photoshop. He simply sets the scene and then somehow miraculously manages to make the ants do exactly what he wants them to! The last picture shows some money being exchanged between him and his ant model crew, but I seriously doubt it does the trick.

There are many memorable movie classics that have heavily influenced modern pop culture and have changed the course of many subsequent films. But, did you ever wonder if there are dresses and costumes from movies that deserve to be called memorable? In my opinion, there are few, and here you can see 20 of those memorable movie dresses. Some of them, like for example Marilyn Monroe’s white dress which she whore in “The Seven Years Itch” become legendary, an icon of film history, and the image of Marilyn Monroe standing above a subway grating blowing the dress up has been described as one of the iconic images of the 20th century.

Cartoon Character Skeletons

We all love cartoon characters because they look so cute and lovable, mostly because of their unrealistic anatomy and disproportion of body parts. They all have huge heads that are sometimes even larger than the rest of their body, but somehow we all overlook that anomaly, and the only thing we see is adorable little cutie. Only by looking at their skeletons we come to realize how absurd their body structure actually is.

Barbie celebrated her fiftieth birthday in 2009 and that inspired the French artist, Jocelyne Grivaud to create a project named “Barbie ma Muse” where Jocelyne recreated some of the most famous works of art with Barbie. This beautiful plastic doll with the most unrealistic body measures often gets bad rap, and tattoo Barbie just made it worse. Well, we decided to present her with more class. Here’s how some of the greatest master pieces from the history of art and some works of modern art and pop culture would look like if the muse was Barbie, instead of some ordinary woman.

28 Pieces of WTF Art from Japan

Japan is know for its weirdness, just as America is known for its fat couch-potatoes. Still, we can’t help our curiosity about the other side. Here are some really weird examples of Japanese artworks that will most likely make you say WTF at the same time, as you’re sending it to your friend by saying: “Dude, you must check this out!” because that’s how WTF stuff works – you’re shocked or even groused by something and at the same time you want to show it to everyone.

1. Come on, be a man! Stick it in there!

Nothing says Japan as nasty combination of human being and some dangerous monster. To make this image complete, we need to add some octopus with tentacles that look like penises and a bunch of school girls, naturally.

A man in love with his pigeon, what can be more normal than that?

3. Stuffed Picachu Rats

Generally, taxidermy makes me uncomfortable. Just knowing that those are stuffed dead bodies of animals that people keep in their houses, or anywhere else as trophies, is really creepy. But, for Japanese people, taxidermy alone wasn’t weird enough, so they decided to paint these poor rats as Picachu so it would scream Japan more obviously.

I have no idea how does this relate to Japan, or what was the point of this cartoon.

Van Gogh Paintings Recreated with Spices

Young photographer and artist, Kelly A. McCollam, came up with a really creative and original method for recreating famous and world-known paintings of Van Gogh. She uses common kitchen ingredients, spices and food color to make these amazing and colorful reproductions. Salt cellar is apparently a thing of past. Now, when you host a fancy diner party, you can just put one of Kelly’s pieces on the table. That way you’ll get both spices and table decoration covered.

Seductive and Frightening Lilith Depictions

Lilith is definitely the most popular female demon in Jewish mythology, folklore and traditional literature and she is also one of the most inspiring mythological creatures in modern art, literature and cinematography. There is something deeply appealing in the idea of an evil female character that is at the same time extremely attractive and seductive, and also very frightening and scary.

The Jews regarded Lilith as evil. According to Jewish folklore, Lilith was forced by three angels to swear she would not harm mothers and children that wore amulets having the names of those three angels.

In Jewish folklore, from the 8th–10th centuries Alphabet of Ben Sira onwards, Lilith becomes Adam’s first wife, who was created at the same time and from the same earth as Adam. This contrasts with Eve, who was created from one of Adam’s ribs.

Lilith left Adam after she refused to become subservient to him and then would not return to the Garden of Eden after she mated with archangel Samael. The resulting Lilith legend is still commonly used as source material in modern Western culture, literature, occultism, fantasy, and horror.

She appears frequently on prophylactic magical bowls. In this context, she is clearly associated with childbirth (e.g. as a threat), and perhaps also as a succubus against which men need protection. In these bowls she is often countered by invoking the powers of her nemesis angels.

Somewhere between the eighth and tenth centuries, CE, she makes an appearance in a satirical work entitled the Alphabet of Ben Sira. It is here that she is first given what has become her most famous persona: the first wife of Adam (before Eve). In this story, she is created at more or less the same time as Adam, and, as was Adam, out of the ground. Because of this she tries to assert her equality — an assertion which Adam rejects. Refusing to conform to Adam’s desires, she escapes from Eden, and is subsequently replaced by the more subservient Eve (who has less claim to equality, since she was made out of Adam’s side). Having escaped Eden, Lilith takes on her renowned role as baby-stealer and mother of demons.

While it is true that there was a rabbinic tradition that Adam briefly had another wife before the creation of Eve (Genesis Rabbah), there is a great deal of doubt as to whether Lilith had any connection at all to this first wife of Adam story prior the publication of the Alphabet. The satirical nature of the Alphabet casts further doubt on the authenticity of this Lilith connection. But whatever its origins, the connection between Lilith and the first Eve seems to have struck a chord with Jewish folk imagination and it is now an inexorable part of those traditions. It has been able to function both as a ‘woman’s story’ (in which Lilith is a role model for uppity women), and as a patriarchal story (in which we see the dire consequences of being an uppity woman). As a midrash, it also helps to solve a problem that arises from the fact that Genesis 1 has mankind created “male and female,” but when we get to Genesis 2, Adam seems to be alone and in need of a partner.

Kabbalistic literature is occasionally aware of the Alphabet story, but more frequently not. Here Lilith usually appears as a partner for Samael (=Satan), and as the chief feminine expression of the Left (evil) Emanation. In some passages, she participates in the temptation of Eve/Adam, and, after the expulsion, she serves as succubus to Adam, generating hoards of demons from his seed. She is also the personification of temptation, and is for all intents and purposes identified with the woman Folly from the early chapters of Proverbs. In one story, she actually serves as consort to the Holy One.

She also appears in Christian iconography. Most late medieval and renaissance paintings of the temptation of Adam and Eve have portrayed the serpent as having a woman’s head and often torso as well. This is usually referred to by art historians as ‘Lilith,’ but there is no Jewish story which easily corresponds to the pictorial representations (the one exception is Bacharach, ‘Emeq haMelekh 23c-d, but it is confusing, and problematic at best). I am led to presume that there were Christian versions of the Lilith myth in which the identification between her and the Serpent were made explicit. Unfortunately, none of these versions have survived in either text or known folklore.

Lilith enjoyed something of a revival in literature beginning in the mid 19th century. Usually she represents the feminine dark side (the part that men subliminally fear). Carl Jung made use of her as prime expression of the anima in men (the suppressed feme within), and the best monograph on her still belongs to one of Jung’s disciples (Siegmund Hurwitz).

She has also been embraced by many modern, particularly Jewish, feminists. Based mainly, or entirely, on the Alphabet, she is presented as the proto-feminist, willing to sacrifice even the paradise of Eden as the necessary cost of freedom and equality. Of course, her role as baby-stealer is usually down-played (or assigned to a patriarchal layer of the tradition). Some neo-pagan groups have taken up her cause as well, either accepting her dark nature as part of larger sacred reality, or finding the erotic goddess within after removing the clutter of what they argue are patriarchal and monotheistic condemnations.

Finally, she has a place in vampire lore either as the first and most powerful of the vampires, or at least as their queen. I can’t help but wonder, why are we, especially men in the Western culture, obsessed with the female principle and why do we instantly connect it with something evil, dark, and negative? Are we too scared of emancipated, free thinking women? The sin of Lilith seems to be double. She did not only refuse obedience to Adam, but she is also represent all carnal desires, terrestrial and everything physical, which means – a distraction from the spiritual and the worship of God. Even Eve, which was far more obedient to Adam, turned out to be a symbol of falter and the original sin. It is really hard to be a religious woman and to keep any self-respect.

Artists are really odd people and the rest of the world can’t really understand them. Were most of the people see nothing but a bunch of dust and dirt, the artists see potential for a future painting or artwork. When Scott Wade sees a dusty car parked by the road, he simple can’t help himself, but stick his hands in the dirt, and after a few minutes of crazy fun and playing with dust, he makes stuff like this:

Living on an unpaved road ensures that the back glass of Wade’s car always has a willing canvas. In addition to his fingers, Wade also uses more traditional tools like brushes as well as unconventional ones like popsicle sticks to create his inspired dust art.

Now, I finally have an excuse for not washing my car regularly. I can simply say, I’m waiting for Scott Wade to come and make a piece of art form that mess.

Ladies, I think I speak for all of us when I say that these shoes are simply too tempting. Like shoes weren’t sweet enough they had to add a scoop of ice-cream with the most delicious topping on it. I don’t know what I want to do first – go shoe shopping or eat an ice-cream. There goes my diet and as well my saving resolution, thanks a lot Rhonda Voo. I’ll start the New Year with all those big decisions, that is if I manage to find some crumbs of determination in myself. In the meantime, I can enjoy and treat myself with both shopping and eating ice-cream.

Weird and Creepy Looking Staircase Covered in Hair

You know how they say all artists are a bit crazy? Well, I have to admit Jessica Wohl brought art craziness to a whole new level. She made an installation featuring a weird and creepy looking staircase completely covered in hair. For this particular work of art she used the stairs in Hot Springs, Arkansas’ abandoned Mountainaire Hotel. The reassuring part is that she didn’t actually use real human hair, just synthetic, but still it doesn’t make the stairs look any less creepy. I can’t even picture myself climbing to the top of this staircase. It’s like being trapped inside of a horror movie.

With these girly breads and colorful hair bands, it looks even cute in a weird and creepy way. If there are any artists among the readers, please explain me the meaning of this hairy artwork, if there is one at all. Maybe she was just trying out ideas for the Halloween house decorations.

It looks really interesting, but I would never watch a movie or read a comic with a superhero that is all broken probably from the inside as well as the outside. Ira Cohen: Psychedelic Photography Master

Photographer and poet Ira Cohen spent the early 1960s in Tangier, Morocco, where he lived and worked with William S. Burroughs and Paul Bowles. He is renowned for his Mylar Chamber images, in which he photographed Jimi Hendrix and others in his New York loft apartment. Cohen died last month at the age of 76. Here we take a look at his life’s work.

Roman Holiday
Another of the Mylar Chamber images. The subject is Jhil McEntyre, one of his major muses of the period and the mother of his son, Raphael Aladdin.

Julian Beck, the abstract expressionist painter and poet who, along with his wife Judith Malina, founded the Living Theater. Julian was a tremendous inspiration and mentor to Cohen. Cohen’s film of the Living Theater performances – Paradise Now – stands as an indelible document of the upheavals of the late 1960s.

Jack Smith, the father of New York underground film and theater. Jack was a mentor to Ira, shaping his artistic aesthetic. Here Smith was preparing for a session of reflective Mylar photographing when Ira captured him in Day-Glo makeup and props.

Another Mylar Chamber image used by Life magazine, 26 December 1969, in its special issue to mark the end of the 1960s. The image illustrated a section on drugs which stated that ‘few came as close to explaining the euphoric distortions of hallucinogenics’ as Cohen.

Licking the skull shows the Aghori’s fearlessness in the face of death. Sadhus, yogis and fakirs fascinated Cohen and he amassed a sizeable portrait gallery of what he termed Spirit Warriors

Master Musicians of Joujouka, Mohamed Mokhchan, Mohamed El Attar, Abdullah Ziyat and Abdeslam Dahnoun with the late Mohamed Hamri in Temple Bar, Dublin, 1992. In the early 1960s Cohen met Hamri in Tangier. Hamri was the Moroccan painter who introduced the Beat poets and Rolling Stone Brian Jones to the Sufi trance music of his village, Joujouka. This photograph was taken during the William Burroughs and Brion Gysin art exhibition, the Here to Go Show, at which both Cohen and Hamri exhibited.

William S Burroughs with poet and author of The Basketball Diaries Jim Carroll. Cohen was active in New York’s downtown arts and poetry scene during the 1980s and 90s. He rarely went anywhere without his Pentax Spotmatic – his camera of choice for most of his career.

According to Cohen’s collaborator Ira Landgarten ‘this was one of the ubiquitous urchins we regularly saw in the streets of Kathmandu. Already smoking cigarettes at a young age, Ira captured this young boy perfectly.’

Miriam was one of the many young travelers who availed themselves to Cohen’s photo tableaus in Kathmandu, Nepal during his sojourn there in the mid-1970s.

Chillum Baba
Cohen had a close association to the sect of Naga Babas, the Shiva worshiping, cannabis imbibing renunciates of Northern India. He photographed them extensively. They regularly smoked a mixture of tobacco and marijuana in cylindrical clay pipes as part of their ritual worship and their search for bliss.

Petra Vogt, Mutant
Vogt was a German actress working with the Living Theater when Ira met her in New York in the late 1960s. She became his collaborator and muse, spending several years with him in India and Nepal. They were an exotic, theatrical couple, goading each other on and pushing their creative envelopes. She eventually became a nun of the Brahma Kumari sect, an international Hindu spiritual organization.

Part of Ira Cohen’s Bandaged Poets series, which first began when Ira met his second wife Caroline Gosselin in Amsterdam in the late 1970s. Gosselin had been making ‘life masks’ and Ira began photographing the process of bandaging all the noted poets that crossed their path. Cohen had originally published Ginsberg in Gnaoua in 1964. Cohen would later wryly comment that Allen Ginsberg made sure New York City wasn’t big enough for two bearded Jewish poets.

Here, Cohen references La Malinche, a controversial figure in Mexican history. Ira was extremely well read and often conjured historical and mythological figures in his photographs and poems.

I agree there hardly is anything prettier or more beautiful than a female body, but making a landscape out of it sounds a bit too much, don’t you think so? Using multiple layers of tinted glass, Chinese artist Xia Xiaowan, transforms flat artwork into 3D sculptures of distorted figures, storms, and dandelion-like explosions. Viewers are treated to different shifting perspectives of his “spatial paintings” depending on where they stand in the art space. On each pane of glass, Xiaowan draws an individual image using colored pencil and only when they are combined on their floor racks do the images create the whole hologram like effect.

Astonishing Predator Fan Art

The Predator is a fictional extraterrestrial species featured in the Predator science-fiction franchise, characterized by its trophy hunting of other dangerous species for sport, including humans and its fictional counterparts, Aliens. Other franchises that have been based on this film include the comic books “Aliens vs. Predator” and the “AVP” film series as well.

First introduced in 1987 as the main antagonist of the film Predator, the Predator creatures returned in the sequels Predator 2 (1990), Alien vs. Predator (2004), Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), and Predators (2010). The Predators have also been the subject of numerous novels, video games, and comic books, both on their own and as part of the Alien vs. Predator crossover imprint. While a definitive name for the species is not given in the films, the names yautja and Hish have been alternatively used in the expanded universe.

Created by brothers Jim and John Thomas, the Predators are depicted as large, sapient and sentient humanoid creatures who possess advanced technology, such as active camouflage and energy weapons, and are capable of interstellar travel.

Hot anime are really taking over the world. Somehow the general taste in women has changed and I think that these illustrations have a lot to do with it. I can’t stop but ask myself why are these characters so attractive? I guess it has something to do with the fact that you can exaggerate in every possible way, because they are just fiction and their proportions can be magnified countless times. Would you dare to enter the dark and twisted world of Chris Cooksey with his unusual sculptures? Here are few images that show us his eccentric and erratic work. It is really not something that you see every day. Each one of his sculptures weather it presents a person or two, or a skeleton or some sort of vehicle is at the same time inhabitated by a vast number of small humans. It is like he is saying that those great one stand proudly and carry the whole humankind upon their shoulders. But what is the meaning behind the sculptures with bare bones and skeletons? Could it be that Chris Cooksey was trying to say that the inevitable idea of death is present in our minds and is following us wherever we go? That is where the war machinery would fit just fine. His sculptures are filled with details and they remind me of Bosch’s triptychs showing seven deadly sins.

The famous traveler Ivan Dementievsky brought us absolutely stunning photographs of Kamchatka from his journey to this amazing peninsula well know for its numerous volcanoes. Here on these photos you can see these volcanoes a few minutes before the eruption and quiet hills in the morning mist. The moments caught in these photos are simply electric and filled with anticipation of the terrible disaster, but still so calm and tranquil that it seems like a scene from a fairy tale. Enjoy!

Irina Vinnik comes from Saint Petersburg, Russia. She is an artist, a designer and an illustrator. She illustrates stunning nature themes, combined with beautiful typography and abstract shapes. She also published a children’s book containing worldwide stories and legends told through breath-taking graphics. I really enjoyed watching her work it has so many details and there are almost no blank spots. Bodyart festival in Australia

The Australian Body Art Carnivale was held in Eumundi from Friday 14 May to Sunday 16 May, 2010. This year saw the expansion of all elements of the festival and the theme was FANTASY.The Carnivale was again be ‘A Festival of Colour’ centred around body art in its many and varied forms. For members of the public, it was nothing short of phenomenal to watch the human canvases take shape during the competitions.

There was a feast of other entertainment including a gala launch with the Masked Gallery Art Walk, competitions and exhibitions in pavement art, wearable art, vehicle body art, photography, and visual art (Art of the Body). There was also music, world-class street performers, children’s workshops, a Saturday evening sunset street party, and a whole lot more.

Astrophotography competition

This is a short overview of the competition for the best astrophotography, which annually conducts the Royal Observatory Greenwich. A competitor may be anybody who takes astrophotos. There is a special Flickr group where the participants can vote and that way make the shortlist, and then the winners will be announced for different categories. In mid-July, the competition was completed and no more works can be sent, and on September 9 the winners will be announced . Exhibition of works will take place from September 9th 2010 to January 9th 2011 in Greenwich.
