Have a look at these silly and ridiculous names that these things originally had. Luckily the creators or who ever was in charge in naming the object/animal/phenomenon decided these original names are a bit of a stretch and decided to change them in the names by which we know them today. Just imagine saying 'camelopards' when referring to giraffes. I have to admit there is some resemblance to camels and leopards because they look a bit like camels and live in Africa and they have spots like leopards, but still it sounds too weird. Washington State was originally going to be named Columbia but people feared that would be confused with the District of Columbia. Glad that confusion crisis was averted!
